Transformation
Midlife Is Your Second Initiation: A Message for Black Women
Aja Diack ยท
In traditional cultures, life was marked by initiations, sacred thresholds where the old self was left behind and a new self was welcomed into being.
The first initiation came with puberty: the becoming of a woman.
The second initiation comes now: the becoming of a Queen.
What Initiation Asks of You
Every initiation involves a death. Not a physical death, but a death of identity, of the person you thought you were, the roles you thought defined you.
This death is uncomfortable. It may feel like crisis. But it is not crisis. It is transformation.
The Three Stages of Initiation
Separation: You begin to feel disconnected from your old life, your old self, your old ways of being. Nothing feels quite right anymore.
Threshold: You enter the in-between. You are no longer who you were but not yet who you're becoming. This liminal space is disorienting, and essential.
Return: You emerge transformed, carrying new wisdom, new power, new purpose. You return to your community not as the person who left, but as someone new.

Your Initiation Guides
You need guides for this journey. Not guides who will do the work for you, but guides who have walked this path and can hold space for your becoming.
This is why community matters. This is why mentorship matters. This is why seeking support is not weakness, it is wisdom.
The Queen Waiting to Emerge
On the other side of this initiation is the Queen you are becoming.
She is wise without being hardened. She is powerful without being controlling. She is loving without abandoning herself.
She has always been within you. This initiation is simply helping her emerge.
